Should I Repair or Replace My Window?

A properly functioning window is for sure one of the best features of any home. Windows not only provide a beautiful view, but they provide enhanced energy efficiency, while keeping your home safe and secure. With that being said, if you discover an issue with one of your windows, one or many of its benefits may be lost. Take a read through the following tips for inspecting and diagnosing the windows in your home. Can they be repaired? Or do they need to be replaced?

Difficult to Open or Close – Repair or Replace?

Most typically when opening or closing a window becomes difficult it is due to problems with the hardware, or possible debris on the track. Majority of the time it is a simple case and you can solve the issue by cleaning out the accumulated dirt, dust, and debris on the sliding track, or tightening up loose hardware.

If you notice that the hardware is bent or broken, it will most definitely need to be replaced!

Cloudy or Foggy Windows? – Repair or Replace?

As windows are constantly exposed to the outdoor elements and forever changing weather conditions, it is only a matter of time before they get worn down. It is essential that you keep your eye open for a cloudy or foggy looking window. If the fogginess lies on the outside of the window, it may just simply need a cleaning. If you wipe your windows down and the fogginess doesn’t go away, this is an indicator of a failed unit. A failed unit can be caused by different reasons, but if this is the case the unit will need to be replaced in order to get the full efficiency benefits out of the window.

Sliding Patio Doors – Repair or Replace?

When it comes to sliding patio doors, the condition of the frame is the most important factor to evaluate in determining whether or not the door can be repaired, or if it is in need of being replaced. If the frame is in good condition, appears to be flat and square, it can most typically be repaired. If the issues are rooted deeper, there might be another means of repairing without having to replace the entire door, but keep in mind, there are some circumstances where the best option is to replace the entire door

I like what you said about debris on the track can damage your window pane. I need to get a contractor who can replace my window panes. They are rotting from condensation.

Seeing your example of a window that’s gotten too foggy was extremely helpful. This is something I’ve been seeing quite often lately, and I really do think that this might be something that I need to address before the hot weather comes along. I’ll call over a window replacement expert so those particular windows can finally be replaced.
